Heavenly Minded

Heavenly Minded

Typically, Monday mornings are not my friend. In fact, I have never been a Monday type person. It’s not because it’s the beginning of a new work week, but more because I am usually still riding the “high” of Sunday services and Sunday Night Youth. The reason for that is I am a people person, that’s how where my energy comes from. So, when it comes to Monday mornings, I still have a little of the jitters of my Sunday “high”.

However, the last few Mondays have been a little different. In fact, it’s been a little different for all of us as of late. Our worlds were interrupted with the news of COVID-19. They were not just interrupted, they were shut down with no interaction except for those living your household. Like many, this has been hard to adapt to. Although, it has been difficult, it has been a nice change of pace from the business of my life.

During the last 8 weeks, I have been drawn to God’s grace and goodness in all of this. One of the passages from God’s word that I have really tried to cling to is Colossians 3:1-3.

Since then, you have been raised with Christ, set your heart on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” (NIV)

What occupies your thoughts? That can be a challenging question, but one that cannot be ignored. As a pastor, coach, husband and father, my thoughts were filled with overloaded tasks and schedules, going from sunrise to sunset and even later on some days. I didn’t realize just how bad I needed a “break” from my hustle and bustle. But, as I read Colossians 3:1-2, I realized that I wasn’t truly setting my mind on things above. I wasn’t fully setting my hearts desire on Jesus Christ and His work in my life.

I was reminded of one of my favorite quotes from the late Pastor, A.W. Tozer. He says, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.

Paul encourages us in these verses to not just about heaven, but also Christ who is in heaven. When we do this we gain a heavenly perspective, we will lose the appeal of this world, and we will realize that Jesus Christ is our security.

What are the things that are occupying your thoughts today?

Set your mind on things above and begin today aligning your thoughts and actions to the Word of God.
